Gym membership cancellation basics

Read the membership agreement for your location: it is where term, notice, and fees are usually written.

By ExitTerms Editorial. .

This is general information, not legal advice. Your plan, billing provider, location, and contract can change what applies to you. Check the provider’s pages and your own account documents before you act.

A gym plan is often a local contract

A health club membership is often a contract with a location, or with the company that operates that location, for a stated term. The national brand on the door can be a different question from the agreement you signed. The agreement is where people usually find the length of the term, the notice the club asks for, any fee to cancel or to end early, how notice has to be delivered, and what a freeze or a move does to billing. This guide describes that pattern. It does not describe every club, and it does not restate a contract we have not read. Your copy of the agreement, and the club’s current instructions, are the documents for your membership.

Ask for your agreement if you do not have it. Look for the end date of any initial term, the number of days of notice, the address or the desk that must receive notice, and any fee. Look for a freeze or suspension section, a relocation section, and a section on what happens if the club closes or if you have a medical reason to stop. Those sections differ by club and by the year the agreement was printed. A blog post about a different brand, or about a different state, can describe a rule that is not in your paperwork.

What our Anytime Fitness entry does and does not say

We publish an Anytime Fitness entry based on that brand’s national FAQ, reviewed on the date the entry shows. The FAQ, as recorded there, says cancellation policies are outlined in the membership agreement for each location, including the cost to cancel, how to cancel, and any additional termination fees. The entry does not list a national online step-by-step, because that FAQ does not describe one. It also records that a hold or suspension is handled with the home club, and that locations are independently owned and operated, so the suspension policy can differ. A relocation transfer is described on the provider’s page as having no transfer fee, and as applying when the move is more than 10 miles from the last residence. Read the entry for the wording and the review date, and read your own agreement, because the FAQ points you there on purpose.

That is one brand. Another club can require notice by mail, a visit, a longer notice window, or a fee the Anytime Fitness FAQ does not set. If we have not published an entry, we are not stating that club’s rules. Absence of a page means we have not reviewed it, which you can also see in the in-progress list on the services page and in how we check.

An app membership is a different product

Peloton is a fitness subscription we publish as its own entry. It is not a key-fob club contract, and the Anytime Fitness notes above do not apply to it. Use the Peloton entry for the channels, notice, and fees that provider’s pages described on the review date. The proof you keep is the same kind of proof: a confirmation with a date, a plan name, and what happens to access and to the next charge. Hardware, financed equipment, and an app membership can be separate bills. Identify which statement line you mean before you cancel one of them. How to read a recurring charge on your statement helps with that split.

Give notice the way the agreement describes

If the agreement says notice has to reach the club in writing, by a visit, or by a stated number of days before the term renews, follow that instruction and keep a copy. A conversation that the agreement does not treat as notice can leave the membership running. Ask the club what it accepts, and ask it to confirm in a form you can save: a receipt, an email to the address on the account, or a copy of the form with a date and a signature or stamp from the club. Photograph the document. How to cancel a subscription and keep proof is the checklist for a desk visit and for a call.

Write down who you spoke with by role and the time, and keep any identifier they give you. Give your own name and account only as the club needs them to find the membership. Store the photos outside the club’s app, in case the app login is tied to an active membership.

Fees, freezes, and moving

Do not assume a cancellation fee, and do not assume there is none. If our entry says “Not stated”, the pages we read did not say, and we do not turn silence into “no fee”. Your agreement is the place to look. A freeze or a suspension can stop dues for a while and then restart them. Ask when dues resume and whether you must appear in person to restart or to end the hold. Get the answer in a form you can keep.

A move is a common reason people try to cancel. Some agreements offer a transfer to another location. Some treat a move as a reason to end early. Some do neither. The Anytime Fitness record described above is specific to the page we reviewed, including the distance it states for a relocation transfer. Use it only for that brand, and only together with the agreement at your club. For any other club, read the relocation section you signed.

If dues keep coming out

Match the draft date to the end date on your confirmation. A draft for a period the agreement still treats as owed can be consistent with the contract. A draft for a period after the date the club said the membership would end is the one to raise with the club first, with the confirmation attached. If the club does not fix a posted card charge and you believe it is a billing error, the credit-card process is in How to dispute an unwanted charge with your card issuer. If dues are a preauthorized debit from a bank account, that same guide explains the stop-payment timing under 12 CFR 1005.10(c). Stopping a debit does not rewrite the membership agreement. Keep the cancellation record either way.

Annual fees, locker fees, and a separate personal-training agreement can be different contracts on the same card. List each one. Cancelling the dues does not always cancel a training package, and the reverse is also true. How to review and audit your subscriptions is a way to see every recurring line, including the ones that are not a streaming app. If a national page we summarize is out of date, report a correction with the link you are looking at.
